Since there have been no cinemas in major box office cities such as New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco for a year, the five major Hollywood studios have repeatedly postponed the release of blockbusters. The huge box office during the Spring Festival in mainland China has also made many American cinema practitioners envious. Recently, New York Governor Cuomo announced that New York cinemas will reopen from March 5, but they must meet a 25% occupancy rate and no more than 50 people per screen.

The first Hollywood blockbusters that New Yorkers can see are the live-action Tom and Jerry movie, which will be released on February 26, and Ragnarok, which will be released on March 5. Currently, about 38% of theaters in North America are open, and it is unclear when Los Angeles, the largest ticket market and the most severely affected city, will reopen.

The reopening of cinemas does not require nucleic acid testing for audiences, but they must wear masks. Because of concerns that indoor gatherings will increase the intensity of infection, the government also requires cinemas to strengthen air circulation functions.

The National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) also issued a statement saying: "Strict and voluntary epidemic prevention measures will allow theaters across the United States to operate safely with higher attendance rates. Currently, no COVID-19 outbreak has been traced back to movie theaters. New York is a major market for American movies, and the reopening there has given film distributors the confidence to set schedules for blockbuster films. This is an important step in the recovery of the entire film industry. We look forward to increasing the screening rate from 25% to 50% in the future so that theaters can operate normally."
