Affected by the epidemic, Warner's 2021 blockbusters will be released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming media

Today (December 4), Warner announced that all 17 of its films released in North America in 2021, including "Dune", "Godzilla vs. Kong", "The Matrix 4", "Tom and Jerry", "The Conjuring 3", "The Suicide Squad", etc., will be released simultaneously on HBO Max, that is, they will also be released on streaming media on the day they are released in North American theaters.

Warner has already adopted this distribution method for this year's "Wonder Woman 1984" (released in theaters + streaming media on the same day in North America on December 25), but such a large-scale synchronization of streaming media and theaters is unprecedented. Warner made this decision because of concerns about the prospects of theaters under the new crown epidemic, and it is uncertain when North American audiences will be able to go to theaters normally like before the epidemic.

Warner said that this operation is only for 2021 and will not last until 2022 and later years. Because they estimate that North American theaters will not be fully open throughout 2021, and "we have these movies to be released, and the audience is very eager for content", so they chose this distribution method to let the audience see it. They believe that there have been many blockbuster movies in China, Japan and other places recently, and the film market is in better condition. HBO Max is only available in the United States. Next year, Warner's movies will not be launched simultaneously on other streaming media, that is, they will still be exclusive to theaters in other places.
