According to /Film, "Hotel Transylvania" director Genndy Tartakovsky is working with King Features, the copyright holder of the classic screen image "Popeye", to launch a new version of the "Popeye" animated film. "As a child I felt I was destined to make a Popeye movie, although that vision has not yet been realized - but that may change soon." Genndy Tartakovsky worked with Sony in 2010 to make a Popeye CG movie, but it was aborted in 2015. "They just wanted to build on the brand awareness of Popeye, but I love this spinach-eating character. He's been with me since I was a kid, so there was a lot of debate about the direction. Sony wanted to reshape the character, but I had to make sure he was still Popeye, so I was only willing to update it a little bit." It is still unknown whether Genndy Tartakovsky's new project will maintain the original design he made for Sony. Let us hope that this character, who was used by his elders to coax people to eat spinach when they were young, can have new charm in the new generation. |
