George Lucas: Many of the concepts of Star Wars were lost after it was sold to Disney

George Lucas, Hollywood's richest director, recently discussed the fate of Star Wars after he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in an interview with French publication Brut at the Cannes Film Festival.

He said in the interview: "I am the one who really understands Star Wars... really understands this world, because there are many things about it. For example, no one understands what the Force is. When I sold the company, they started to have other ideas, and a lot of (original) ideas were thrown away. But that's the way it is. Since you have given up, you can only let it go."

His own production company was sold to Disney for $4.05 billion in 2012. 20th Century Fox was the original distributor of the "Star Wars" trilogy and prequel trilogy. Disney later acquired Fox in 2019 and obtained their distribution rights.

Since the acquisition, Disney has launched a large number of Star Wars-related films and TV series, but the reviews are mixed. The first part of the new trilogy was well received, but the reviews of each part after that declined until The Rise of Skywalker hit the bottom. In terms of TV series, The Mandalorian and Andor are very popular, but Solo and Obi-Wan have poor reputations. Overall, the core fans of the series have a very poor evaluation of Disney, especially the "correctness" that Disney has forced to promote has permeated all its IPs, causing many works to be controversial.

In the interview, Lucas responded to the criticism from many "fans" that the previous six films were "all white", saying that "most of the characters are aliens" and that the movie's "concept is that you should accept people as they are, whether they are furry or green or whatever. The concept is that all people are equal."

He also responded to criticism from some critics about the portrayal of female characters in Star Wars, saying, "Who do you think is the hero of these stories? Who do you think is Princess Leia? She's the leader of the Resistance. She's the one who guides this young kid who knows nothing (Luke) and this messed up and egotistical guy who can't do anything (Han Solo) and tries to save the Resistance with this bunch of clowns... The same thing with Queen Amidala."

"You can't just put a woman in pants and think she's a hero. They can wear a skirt, they can wear whatever they want. It's their own brain and their own ability to think, plan and have logic. That's what makes them heroic."
