There’s still some time until critics’ scores for Christopher Nolan’s new biopic Oppenheimer are released, but the film has already received a stamp of approval from Kai Bird, one of the authors of the biography that inspired the film about the “father of the atomic bomb”. Kay Bird, who co-authored the 2005 biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer with Martin J. Sherwin, gave a positive and enthusiastic review of the new film in a lecture at the Institute for Advanced Study. “I’m still recovering from watching it, and I think it’s going to be an amazing artistic achievement, and I hope it will really inspire a national and global discussion about the issues that Oppenheimer was desperate for: about how to live in the atomic age, how to live with the atomic bomb and McCarthyism, what it means to be a patriot, and what the role of scientists is in a society filled with technology and science, and more public discussion,” Bird said. In Oppenheimer, the famous scientist will be played by actor Cillian Murphy, and Nolan said in a recent interview with Total Film that he was "blown away" by the actor's performance. “I’m asking things of an actor that very few actors in the history of film have been able to do,” Nolan said. “I will say that even though I had faith in him from the beginning, he continued to surprise me every day on the set. When we got into the editing room and put the performance together and saw what it really was, I was completely blown away.” Oppenheimer, which also stars Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh, is set to hit theaters on July 21, the same day as the live-action Barbie film. |
