DC creates new "Superman" movie: Director Gunn is responsible for the script and Superman will not return

DC is making a new "Superman" movie, with the script being written by DC Films President James Gunn himself. Henry Cavill will not return, which means that the new "Superman" movie will use a new protagonist.

James Gunn tweeted:

"Peter and I have a slate of DC Films that we are incredibly excited about. We will be sharing exciting news about our first projects in early 2023.

We have Superman in our plans and in the early stages our story will focus on Superman's early life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.

However, we just had a great meeting with Henry Cavill, of whom we are huge fans, and we discussed many exciting possibilities for future collaborations.”

Henry Cavill just said in late October that he would play Superman again, but after meeting with DC Films co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, he officially announced today that he would bid farewell to the role and wrote a statement:

"I just met with James Gunn and [DC Films co-CEOs] Peter Safran and here's the sad news: Folks, I will not be returning to play Superman.

The studio did notify me in October this year to come back (to guest star in Black Adam), but that happened before the two were hired. This news was not easy for me, but such is life.

Changes in management are common and I respect that. James and Peter have their own universe they want to build and I wish them and everyone involved the best of luck.

For those of you who have supported me over the years, we may have to do a little “remembering”. But we must remember…Superman is still here, everything he stood for is still here, and the example he set is still here! My time wearing the cape is over, but what Superman stood for will never be over. It’s been a fun journey, moving forward and upward with you.”
