Avatar 2 cost nearly $400 million to make, one of the most expensive movies in history

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar 2: The Way of Water is one of the most expensive movies in Hollywood history. The budget for the film was around $250 million, but now it is estimated that its production cost is between $350 million and $400 million.

Director James Cameron once called "Avatar 2" the worst business case in film history. It cost too much money. The box office would have to reach the third or fourth place in the single-film box office list in film history (US$800 million in North America and around US$2 billion worldwide) to break even. It would need to make more to be profitable.

Interestingly, when a Fox executive pleaded with Cameron to shorten Avatar 2's 192-minute run, Cameron yelled, "Get out of my office!"

Avatar 2 is directed by James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, etc. It is 3 hours and 10 minutes long. The film is scheduled to be released in mainland China on December 16 and in North America at the same time.
