Henry Cavill to Retire as Geralt in The Witcher Season 3

Henry Cavill will no longer be playing Geralt of Rivia after the third season of Netflix's The Witcher concludes.

Netflix has announced that Liam Hemsworth, best known for his role in The Hunger Games film series, will be starring in season 4.

The Witcher TV series, based on the bestselling book series by Andrei Sapkowski, premiered in 2019 to critical acclaim. It is primarily based on the novel series rather than the games, but it does include elements from the very popular CD Projekt RPG game series.

"My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with monsters and adventure, and I will be laying down my medallion and sword in season four," Cavill said in a statement.

"The brilliant Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking over from me as the White Wolf. As with the greatest literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence, having taken the time to embody Geralt and watching with enthusiasm Liam’s interpretation of this most fascinating and nuanced of men."

"As a fan of The Witcher, I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia," Hemsworth said in a statement.

“Henry Cavill has been incredible as Geralt, and I’m honored that he has entrusted me with the role, allowing me to take up the sword of the White Wolf and begin the next chapter of his adventure.”

"Henry, I've been a fan of yours for years and I'm so inspired by the charm you bring to this much-loved character. I may have a lot of work to do, but I'm really excited to enter the world of The Witcher."

Season three is set to premiere in summer 2023, with the spinoff The Witcher: Blood Origin set to premiere on Christmas Day 2022.
