Duke Nukem live-action movie in production, currently seeking director and screenwriter

Legendary Entertainment is teaming up with Cobra creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg to bring Duke Nukem to the big screen.

According to THR, Legendary bought the film adaptation rights from Gearbox and will work with Jean Julien Baronnet of Mara Studios, the producer of the "Assassin's Creed" movie, to produce the film.

Duke Nukem is currently seeking a writer and director.

In 2018, it was reported that John Cena was originally scheduled to star in the Duke Nukem adaptation produced by Paramount and Platinum Dunes, but the project ultimately did not go ahead. Will John Cena get another chance to play the legendary hero, especially since he recently played a similar role in the Peacemaker TV series? Only time will tell.

Duke Nukem was developed by Apogee Software (now 3D Realms) and released on July 1, 1991. Since then, the parody of a Hollywood action hero has built a billion-dollar video game franchise and helped pave the way for first-person shooters.

The game is set in the near future. The protagonist Duke's mission is to stop Dr. Proton, a madman who is betting the world on his high-tech robots. The game takes Duke out of the city and fights Proton on space stations and other imaginary locations.
