New film adaptation of American Psycho in production, directed by Suspiria director

Deadline reported today (October 19) that Italian director Luca Guadagnino, who produced Call Me by Your Name and remade the horror film Suspiria, will direct a new version of American Psycho. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis and will be distributed by Lionsgate.

The script will be written by Scott Z. Burns, who has worked on The Bourne Supremacy, Side Effects and Deduction.

There are no details about the film's plot yet, so it's unclear whether this will be a retelling of the original or a standalone story. Deadline's sources note that the film should not be considered a remake of the cult thriller starring Christian Bale.

The original novel and the first film adaptation tell the story of Patrick Bateman, a wealthy investor and Wall Street banker who becomes a brutal serial killer.

Lionsgate said Guadagnino was the perfect choice to create a "new interpretation of a classic series." In recent years, the director also collaborated with Timothée Chalamet on the feature film "Full and Complete" and with Zendaya on "The Contender."
