Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is set in the fictional island nation of Hinomoto. In this world, monsters called "Kabane" that feed on the dead are rampant, and people survive by holed up in fortified cities called "stations." The protagonist, Ikoma, is a blacksmith who works with steam engines. One day, he is bitten by a Kabane, but by circulating a special blood flow through his heart, he is able to prevent himself from becoming a Kabane and become a being called a "Kabaneri." Together with his friends, Ikoma boards a train called the Iron Fortress and sets out on a journey to escape the Kabane and find a new way to survive.
