"Saint Seiya" Chun Li voice actor recalls that the dubbing pay was so low that it was worse than working part-time

According to foreign media reports, the voice actor Yumiko Shibata, who played Shiryu's lover Chun-Li in "Saint Seiya", recently recalled her dubbing pay, which sparked heated discussions among netizens, who were amazed that it was so low that it was not as good as working a part-time job.

As we all know, as a country of animation and games, Japan's voice actor dubbing industry is very developed. However, the salary of voice actors is not so luxurious. According to voice actor Yumiko Shibata, when she received the dubbing work, the salary for each "book" was only 5,000 yen. She received 4,000 yen, and she had to deduct her own transportation expenses, which left her with only 3,500 yen in the end. No matter how many roles she played, this was the only amount she got in a day.

She certainly couldn't survive on this alone. Shibata Yumiko admitted that she worked part-time at night, selling drinks in bars and clubs, earning 3,500 yen an hour.

However, to this day, compared with the voice actors’ glamorous appearance and decent and interesting work, their income has actually always been far lower than the outside world imagines. Only by accumulating quietly and gaining a reputation can they earn more through other side jobs.
