Michael Douglas: Modern films control too much intimate sex scenes

In the past few years, the rise of "intimacy coordinators" in Hollywood has led Michael Douglas to wonder if modern movies are too controlling with intimacy/sex scenes.

Douglas recently accepted an interview with the Daily Telegraph and shared his views on "intimacy coordinators." He said: "All intimacy coordinators are interesting. It feels to me like executives have taken control away from filmmakers. Of course, there have been some serious incidents of disrespect and harassment."

Douglas added: "The intimate/sex scenes are just as choreographed as the fight scenes. In my experience, as a man, it's your responsibility to make sure the woman is comfortable and you say, 'Okay, if you don't mind, I'm going to touch you here.' It's slow, but it looks like it's happening naturally, which is what good acting is all about."

Times have changed since Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct. Douglas admits that bad behavior does happen on set, saying: "I'm sure there were people who crossed the line, but in the past we would have dealt with it ourselves. They would have gotten a bad rap and that would have been dealt with... I've talked to some of the actresses, because I've done a few of these intimate films - now we joke about what it would be like to have an intimacy coordinator working with us..."

Intimacy coordinators work closely with directors and actors to ensure that everything is done safely, respectfully, and consensually. They also act as advocates for the actors, ensuring that they always agree to all aspects of the scene and are not forced to do anything beyond what was agreed upon beforehand. Some people think that this takes away some of the spontaneity of intimate/sexual scenes; others think that it keeps everyone safe.
