The latest footage of Star Wars 9 at the D23 Expo shows Rey using a double-headed red lightsaber

New footage from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker debuted at the D23 show. While the trailer shown to the audience has not yet been released to the public (or online), Gamesradar's reporters witnessed this new video at the D23 symposium, and in the final shot: a Jedi Knight also seems to have fallen to the dark side.

The presentation begins with a montage of old Star Wars movies, including bits from the original, prequels, and sequels. Then, the first new footage: Rey, Poe, Finn, C3PO, and R2D2 appear on a new desert planet. They appear to be in a large, bustling market area.

Then there's a thrilling montage of new scenes, including a shot of hundreds of Star Destroyers appearing in space, and C3PO with red eyes. Also seen: Kylo Ren and Rey once again engage in an epic lightsaber battle, with waves rolling around them. Rey is still using a blue lightsaber at this time... At the last moment, she picked up a red double-headed lightsaber. (In Star Wars, red lightsabers are generally held by Sith, especially double-headed lightsabers.)

Will she turn to the dark side? The brief shot, which lasts two seconds, shows Rey wearing an ominous hood and wielding a double-headed red lightsaber that vaguely resembles the one first seen in The Force Awakens.

Debate will surely rage over whether this is a Palpatine-inspired vision or her future. What we know so far is that The Rise of Skywalker looks intriguing.

A new Star Wars 9 poster has also been released, as shown below. Director JJ Abrams also talked about Carrie Fisher's inclusion in the film, saying, "Without Leia, we couldn't have done the ending of these movies. Carrie's Leia's appearance in this film will use footage from Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens."
