"Space Battleship Yamato" can be regarded as the ancestor of Japanese animation. The original author and animation director is the famous Japanese cartoonist Leiji Matsumoto. It represents the beginning of Japanese animation.

The story begins in 2199 AD, when the Earth is on the verge of extinction due to an attack from the mysterious planet Gamiras. The radioactivity released by the planetary bomb has contaminated the Earth's surface, and humans have no choice but to flee underground to survive.
