The new actor said that he wanted to try something different from Ron Perlman. Previously, director Guillermo del Toro wanted to re-launch the third film in the Hellboy series with the original "Hellboy" Ron Perlman after "Hellboy" in 2004 and "Hellboy 2" ("The Golden Army") in 2008, but ultimately failed to do so due to budget issues. But soon after, the producers of the series, Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin, began to plan to restart the project.
