Rick Riordan reiterated that the original intention of writing the novel "Percy Jackson" was to pursue inclusiveness, because his son, who loved listening to Greek mythology stories since childhood, suffered from dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In order to help his son overcome setbacks, he conceived Percy Jackson who suffered from the same disease, so that his son could resonate with it and get inspired by the heroic adventure plot of the story.

Riordan continued: "Twenty years later, it was so important to revisit these stories with fresh eyes, to make sure they resonated with kids and that everyone could see themselves reflected in the series, that it was inclusive enough for everyone to be a hero, and that was my motivation for writing the book in the first place."

Leah Sava Jeffries, who plays Annabeth, also said: "The character I'm playing is a completely different person, she has a different hair color, a different skin tone and all that.
