Recently, The New York Times published an article about the so-called "era of diversity" in Hollywood. They believe that the era of "diversity" in Hollywood movies is coming to an end because audiences don't like to watch such movies. For example, the movie Black Panther earned $1.3 billion in 2018. However, now such movies continue to fail at the box office and have basically become a niche genre. Unlike the previous era of westerns/gangsters/action movies, the era of diversity has left nothing good behind. In order to diversify their films, studios have tried to use different racial/ethnic representations, but often at the expense of story logic, adding "diversity characters" to the film. This basically makes the film bland and unmemorable. Take Captain Marvel as an example. She is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, but she hardly plays any important role in Marvel movies, as if she was just there for the sake of appearing. The New York Times believes that the era of diversity is just a flash in the pan and will not last long. Unlike the era of westerns/gangsters/action films, there are not many masterpieces worth praising in the era of diversity, no action movies like Sergio Leone, Francis Coppola or Schwarzenegger/Stallone. |
