The plot of "The Wandering Earth 2" revolves around the character played by Li Xuejian. The story takes place in the era when a plan was proposed to build 10,000 planetary engines. It is a prequel to "The Wandering Earth". When the crisis is about to happen, humans face two choices in the face of the solar crisis. One is to embark on an adventure full of unknowns, build planetary engines, and take the earth away from danger. The other is to transform oneself into a digital body and gain another form of immortality. Guo Fan once revealed that the second episode will have more science fiction ideas and more worldviews in the story level.

"The Wandering Earth 2" is directed by Guo Fan, produced by Liu Cixin, and starred by Wu Jing, Li Xuejian, Sha Yi, Ning Li, Wang Zhi, and Zhu Yanmanzi, with a special appearance by Andy Lau. It will be released on the first day of the Lunar New Year in 2023.
