Native Americans boycott Avatar 2, calling it a 'white savior' film

Although "Avatar 2" has exceeded $900 million in global box office, it is still somewhat below expectations overall.

According to a report by the British Independent on December 24, "Avatar: The Way of Water" (hereinafter referred to as "Avatar 2"), which was regarded as a market-saving blockbuster, was boycotted by Native American groups after its release. They angrily denounced the film for racial discrimination.

In the first "Avatar" movie, in the future, humans launched a colonial war against Pandora to exploit resources. Jack Sully, a disabled former marine, accepted a government mission and participated in an experiment to infiltrate the indigenous Na'vi people of Pandora after becoming an "Avatar". In the process of contacting the Na'vi, Sully fell in love with the female Na'vi Neytiri and "found his conscience", leading the Na'vi to repel the Earth colonists.

Crystal Echo Hawk, leader of the Aboriginal organization IllumiNative, also criticized: "This is based on James Cameron's view of Aboriginal history and Aboriginal culture. Everyone thinks that Aboriginal people are a huge entity. What this movie does is flatten the identity, culture, language and customs of various Aboriginal peoples."

Previously, Cameron said in an interview that "Avatar 2 is the worst business case in the history of movies" and that the box office must be at least "top three or top four in the world", that is, about 2 billion US dollars (about 14 billion RMB) to break even. Foreign media analyzed that if "Avatar 2" cannot reach this target, then Disney is likely to cancel the planned "Avatar 3" and "Avatar 4".
