Lucasfilm President: Star Wars fans are mostly male, actresses are suffering from poisoning

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that because the Star Wars fan base is predominantly male, women in the Star Wars universe, such as Leslye Headland, showrunner of the series Star Wars: Bellboy, are struggling and "being toxic."

Kennedy spoke to The New York Times about the importance of female characters in Star Wars. Waiter will be the first TV series created by a woman in the 47-year history of Star Wars, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will become the first female director of a Star Wars movie, directing the sequel starring Daisy Ridley.

“I think storytelling needs to represent everyone, and it was an easy decision for me,” Kennedy said, before admitting that working on a franchise like Star Wars is “terrifying” these days.

“It’s intimidating to be working on these big franchises right now, with the rise of social media and the expectations of the audience. I think Leslye struggled with that a little bit. I think a lot of women coming into Star Wars struggled with that a little bit more because the fan base is so male-dominated and they get attacked very personally sometimes.”

She continued: "Obviously, Deborah Chow directed Obi-Wan, and there are many, many women who have contributed to the films. But to be at the center of the narrative, the word that comes to mind is what a true honor it is. It's so special to me. I think it's a very rare thing to do, and the fact that I get to be the one to do it is just a testament to how much I love Star Wars, and I'm not going to stop until I do a Star Wars movie."
