For the first time in Oscar history, a streaming service received the most nominations this year. Netflix received 24 Oscar nominations on Monday, more than any other media company nominated this year. The achievement for Netflix signals a new attitude toward streaming services at the Academy Awards, which have had a tough road to the Oscars. The streaming service has previously clashed with content creators, theater owners and the Academy Awards. Of course, getting the most nominations doesn't mean Netflix will win the most awards. Last December, the streaming service also received the most nominations (17) at the Golden Globe Awards, but only won two awards. Behind Netflix are Disney with 23 nominations and Sony Pictures with 20 nominations. Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures received 12 and 11 nominations respectively, ranking fourth and fifth. |
