2023 summer box office total breaks record, domestic films dominate the charts

Although there is no "Domestic Protection Month", Hollywood movies are no match for Chinese movies.

According to data from Lighthouse Professional Edition, as of 19:21 on August 17, the total box office of the 2023 summer season exceeded 17.778 billion yuan, breaking the record for the highest box office in the summer season in Chinese film history. There are currently 14 days left until the end of the summer season.

The top five films in the 2023 summer box office list are:

1. "She's Gone" 3.521 billion

2. All or Nothing: 2.253 billion

3. "Octagon Cage" 2.187 billion

4. "The First Part of the Investiture of the Gods" 2.135 billion

5. "30,000 Miles in Chang'an" 1.739 billion

This year, Hollywood movies finally made it to the summer season, breaking the past practice of giving way to imported films during the "domestic film protection month" from June to August each year. However, these films were unexpectedly "killed" by Chinese domestic films.

Even super IPs like Transformers and Mission Impossible have lost their glory, and their box office revenues are less than a fraction of the popular domestic films. Among them, Mission Impossible 7 was released in mainland China on July 14, and the final mainland box office is expected to be no more than 350 million yuan (currently 346 million yuan).

Looking at the top 10 of the list, only two foreign films, "The Meg 2: Abyss" and "Transformers: Power Rangers", made the list, ranking seventh and eighth.

In this regard, the US media said, "This box office record was created by Chinese domestic films, and the contribution of American Hollywood films is minimal."

The only film that has achieved good results in the Chinese market in the past year may be "Avatar: The Way of Water", which was released on December 16, 2022, and earned nearly 1.7 billion yuan in the mainland box office. However, the report also pointed out that this achievement was to a certain extent due to the "revenge consumption" of Chinese audiences at that time.
