CW to produce new DC superhero series "Naomi"

The CW is continuing to expand its superhero series lineup, and another DC series will soon be put into production. According to Deadline, The CW is developing a new series based on the 2019 limited comic book series "Naomi" written by Brian Michael and David F. Walker and drawn by Jamal Campbell.

"Naomi" will be created by "New Gods" director/co-writer Ava DuVernay and former "Green Arrow" writer/co-executive producer Jill Blankenship. The two will serve as co-writers and executive producers in the new series. "Naomi" will be co-produced by DuVernay's Array Filmworks and Warner Bros Television.

Naomi tells the story of teenage hero Naomi McDuffie (whose last name is supposedly a nod to Dwayne McDuffie). The comic focuses on her inner struggles after discovering her superpowers and her unusual role in the DC Universe. The character also appears as a newcomer in Bendis' Young Justice.

The official introduction of the "Naomi" comic reads: "Naomi tells the story of a girl's adventure from a small northwestern town all the way to the height of the multiverse. Her hometown is involved in a supernatural incident. Naomi will explore the origin of the incident, and in the process her discoveries subvert our understanding of all heroes."

Deadline has not reported what role Naomi will play in the Arrowverse, but the show should be set in the same world as CW shows such as The Flash, Supergirl and Batwoman.

"Naomi" is one of the many new DC dramas under the CW. In February 2021, "Superman & Lois" will also premiere on the CW.
