The film focuses on Danny Torrence, the son of The Shining. After experiencing a terrible childhood in the Overlook Hotel, he has been wandering for decades, eager to get rid of his father's despair, alcoholism, violence and other traits, and finally settled in a small town in New Hampshire, an AA community that supports him. He found a job in a nursing home, where his remaining "Shining" power provided vital final comfort for the dying.

With the help of a precognitive cat, he becomes "Doctor Sleep". In 2001, a baby girl, Abra Stone, is born, who gradually begins to display supernatural powers and seems to have predicted the events of 9/11. She slowly and unintentionally forms a telepathic bond with Danny, and as she grows and becomes more powerful than Danny's, Danny's demons are reignited and summoned to fight for Abra's soul and survival.
