According to Variety, the "Starship Troopers" movie reboot, Neill Blomkamp, the director of "District 9", "Elysium" and "Chappie", will write and direct a new adaptation based on the 1959 science fiction novel of the same name (written by Robert A. Heinlein), produced by Columbia Pictures, a subsidiary of Sony. While exact plot details remain closely guarded, the new Starship Troopers movie is said to be inspired by Heinlein's original military story, rather than the fascist-parodying style of Paul Verhoeven's original adaptation. In addition to writing and directing, Blomkamp is also producing the film with his longtime collaborator Terri Tatchell. Sony last recruited Blomkamp for the live-action Gran Turismo film, which was released in August 2023 and grossed $120 million worldwide against a production budget of $60 million. In 1997, Sony TriStar Pictures invested heavily in the original Starship Troopers film, with a production budget of more than $100 million, impressive miniatures, cutting-edge special effects technology, and an up-and-coming cast that included Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, and Neil Patrick Harris. Despite this, the film was widely considered a box office failure upon its release, grossing just $121 million worldwide, though it has since gone on to gain a reputation as a cult film for its ultra-violent satire of fascist society. |
