Superhero movies lack sex scenes? Director Gunn: There are plenty. Sex is part of life.

Sexual depictions in movies are difficult to control, especially in superhero movies, which have a lot of younger audiences. Most commercial movies, such as Superman 2 and 1989's Batman, do not have sex scenes in the film, as these movies are mostly intended for children. According to Hollywood director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Twelve), one of the main reasons he won't direct a superhero movie is that it "has no sex scenes."

Over time, the phenomenon of superhero movies without sex scenes has changed, from the second-generation Nite Owl and the second-generation Silk Specter having sex in an airship in "Watchmen" in 2009, to the long sex scene at the beginning of "Deadpool" in 2016, and last year, Marvel's "Eternals" became the latest superhero movie to show sex scenes.

Recently, director James Gunn (Suicide Squad, Peacemaker) responded to Steven Soderbergh's words, saying that this was not the case, and posted screenshots of superhero movies containing sex scenes.

James Gunn responded, "I, Zack Snyder, Richard Donner, Zhao Ting, Tim Miller (sex scenes in the movie) all flashed through my mind. However, for Soderbergh, many comic book movies seem to have no sex, so his statement is not groundless."

Fans were supportive of this and Gunn responded to the necessity of sex scenes in superhero movies by saying that it is not a sex scene, but that sex is a part of life.

"It's not necessary in any single story, but to have a completely genderless cinematic universe is a denial of who we are as humans, and who we are as individuals," Gunn said.
