Due to the influence of "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train", the sales of Japanese CDs have increased significantly

The Japan Video Software Association recently released statistics on home video software DVD and Blu-ray purchases in Japan from January to July 2021. Although physical disc sales continue to decline due to increased consumer use of streaming services such as Netflix and Crunchyroll, the critically acclaimed anime film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train has helped the Japanese physical disc industry significantly increase sales.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train was released in Japan on October 16, 2020, and gradually began to be released worldwide until around July 2021. During its release, it quickly became the highest-grossing film of 2020, earning a whopping $500 million. It also became the highest-grossing anime of all time, as well as the highest-grossing Japanese film.

Box office sales quickly turned into physical media sales, with over 1 million copies of the film discs. The combined sales of "Japanese anime" specifically categorized as general public and "Japanese anime" referred to as "children's anime" were around 26 billion yen, or about 38% of total sales. This makes anime the most popular genre, surpassing music. With the much-anticipated second season of Demon Slayer set to be released in 2021, we can expect physical disc sales of anime media to continue to climb.
