Wes Boll, the director of Sony Pictures' upcoming The Legend of Zelda film, promises that fans will be pleased with their work. Weiss shared the following statement in a recent interview: "We're working hard on this movie. I think it's going to be great and the fans are going to be happy. The Legend of Zelda is one of the most important things in my life, second only to Star Wars. I've been playing Zelda my whole childhood and into adulthood, you know. I'm a fan, a fellow human being. I will do everything in my power to make sure it becomes the movie we all want it to be.” It still feels weird that we're finally getting a live-action Zelda movie, and that it's coming from Sony, but Miyamoto took up the offer from former Marvel Studios president Avi Arad, who's currently producing Sony's Spider-Man movies under the Marvel license. Sony is therefore no stranger to seemingly contradictory arrangements, and Nintendo is willing to work with Sony Pictures even when there are clear conflicts of interest. Perhaps this is exactly what we should expect to see in the future, as adaptations of Fallout and The Last of Us also end up in the hands of not the parent company, but their competitors. The success or failure of this film will largely be attributed not to Arad, but to Wes Ball, as directors are often the most scrutinized figures in a film project. While few people noticed Wes's excellent work on the Maze Runner movies, his contribution to the modern-day Planet of the Apes series has been recognized by critics and fans alike. We don't think this project is a sure thing, but Nintendo and Sony appear to have built a solid foundation to ensure success. Once news breaks about casting and other production details, we'll surely begin to debate, but for now, we can rest assured that a Nintendo fan is making this movie. |
