Nippon Television announces acquisition of Studio Ghibli as subsidiary

On September 21, Nippon Television announced that it would acquire 42.3% of the shares of animation production company Studio Ghibli, and Studio Ghibli would become a subsidiary of Nippon Television starting October 6. After the acquisition, Nippon Television will respect the autonomy of Studio Ghibli, and Studio Ghibli will continue to focus on animation production and the management of the Ghibli Museum and Ghibli Park.

The current president of Studio Ghibli, Toshio Suzuki, explained that considering the age of Hayao Miyazaki and himself (82 years old, 72 years old), it is necessary to find a successor for the future of Ghibli, but Hayao Miyazaki does not agree to hand over Ghibli to his eldest son Goro Miyazaki. Hayao Miyazaki believes that Ghibli needs the help of a large company rather than an individual. Now, Studio Ghibli will let Nippon Television take charge of the management part.
