DC veteran 'Batman: Gotham by Gaslight' screenwriter Brian Augustine dies

Writer/editor Brian Augustine has died after suffering a stroke, according to a Facebook post by longtime collaborator and friend, author Mark Waid. Waid disclosed the news of Augustine's death on his Facebook page, without being asked by Augustine's family to make the announcement.

Augustine rose to prominence in the comics industry as a senior editor at DC from 1987 to 1996, editing major titles including Justice League, The Flash, and Wonder Woman, while also working closely with Wade as co-editor and later in a writer's position.

Augustine also broke new ground for DC as the writer of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, the first “Elseworlds” title in DC’s previously “multiple reality”-focused series. Along with co-writer Wade, Augustine also redefined the origins of the Justice League in JLA: Year One, adapting the team’s earliest adventures for a modern setting. He also teamed up with Wade again for a long-running, fan-favorite run on The Flash, which brought Wally West to the forefront of the DC Universe.

In addition to his main work at DC, Augustine has also written comics for Marvel, Dark Horse, Wildstorm, Chaos, and others.

Augustine is survived by his wife Nadine and daughters Carrie and Ellie. Wade announced Augustine's death and asked that messages of condolences and support be sent to him, and he volunteered to deliver the news to Augustine's family on their behalf.
